Yewbank Wood £59,500 Freehold

  • Meathop, Grange over sands, South Lakes
  • about 4 ⅓ acres
  • Cumbria

Description

Yewbank Wood is primarily yew woodland growing on limestone and is best described by the National Vegetation Classification as W13 (Taxus baccata - yew woodland) which is a rare native woodland habitat in the UK. Within Cumbria, it is only found in a few locations. As the land levels out at the top of the escarpment the wood becomes more diverse with a range of broadleaved trees evident. This part of the wood has a hazel understory and a diversity of plants including bluebells, dogs mercury and wild garlic. The plant communities indicate that Yewbank has been woodland for a very long time and is recorded as Ancient Semi Natural Woodland meaning that the land has been continuously wooded since at least 1600 AD. The wood was once part of the grounds of what is now the Woodlands Hotel.

Yewbank Wood is a beautiful, rich and intriguing wood with easy access to its slopes and paths. It is open access woodland (designated under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000).

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Trees

Along the roadside, the woodland is a mixture of ash, sycamore and hazel. Moving towards and immediately atop the bank is a band of yew trees with some singularly impressive examples. The subsequent area then contains a wide mix of native broadleafs with hawthorn, hazel, ash, sycamore, cherry and willow.

Wildlife

The knarled trunks of the venerable yew provide a perfect refuge for a diversity of invertebrates, this in turn supports and gives a home to a range of small birds and gives a perfect roots for nocturnal bats.

Intersecting the pathways, smaller trails indicate the presence of itinerant roe deer and badgers, mainly visible at dusk and dawn.

Endangered red squirrels are still present within the woods and are the focus of county-wide measures to protect them.

Features

The main feature of the wood is quite simply its population of beautiful yew trees growing on the limestone.

Access, tracks and footpaths

Access into the wood is directly off a minor road and straight into the wood through the ridestop entrance.

Within the wood a number of pathways giving easy access throughout.

Local area and history

Yewbank Wood is perfectly located on the southern edge of the Lake District National Park with the Lakeland fells to the north and Morcambe Bay to the south. There are plenty of B+Bs locally as well as a caravan site and the 4 star Woodlands Hotel, just down the road.

In the Victorian era, this area was intensively coppiced mainly to provide the Lancashire textile mills with bobbins and other wooden implements but also for charcoal and basket making.
