Coed Garw - Garw Wood, Powys - About 4¾ acres, £49,000

Coed Garw - Garw Wood

Coed Garw is a mature broadleaf woodland which was once a thriving slate quarry. When the Rhiw'r Gwreiddyn Slate Works was at its highest capacity back in 1898 it employed 72 workers which then reduced to only 5 workers by the end of the 1930s. You can still see remains of some of the slate buildings nearby. Coed Garw has a large quarry which now has lots of trees, mosses and ferns growing on the walls leading to the bottom. At the bottom there is a small pool that is connected to a stream that disappears underground through a cave one way and on the opposite side of the quarry the stream goes through a small hole in the quarry wall, down through the wood to eventually join the river Dulas. This quarry and cave provides an excellent habitat for local insects and bats.

There are still remains of the slate workings that give an insight on how the quarry workers were able to extract the slate, in particular, above the quarry are the remains of a slate built column which would appear to have once had a large pulley bolted onto it. The pulley would most likely have had metal cables that went down into the quarry to pull up the slate that was mined.

The majority of the trees now growing here include mature oak, ash, siver birch, alder and hazel.

Some of the wildlife seen and heard here include many song birds, owl, woodpecker, buzzard, fox

Coed Garw has a wooden gate at the entrance which opens onto a hard standing area that could be used for parking a vehicle when visiting the wood or using as a base for woodland activities. From here there is a track that travels up to the top of the quarry where there is a small level clearing with a bench which has great views down the valley.

Please take care when viewing the wood, as there are some steep rock faces. It is possible to walk down to the pool in the bottom of the quarry, but it can be a slippery climb back out.

Nearby is the Centre for Alternative Technology and a short distance away is the market town of Machynlleth for local amenities.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
