Bridle Wood And Meadow - SOLD, West Sussex - About 5⅓ acres, £65,000

Bridle Wood And Meadow - SOLD

Description

Here, about 20 years ago, the historical grazing by cattle and horses ceased and the land was left to nature; large oak and ash on the field boundaries produced thousands of acorns and ash keys which over the years have emerged from the pasture and now show as semi-mature trees of varying ages. Untouched by man, ecological succession will lead to a climax woodland, as trees take over any open ground. The process continues, seedlings can be found at grass height but now the resident deer population are slowing the whole process and maintaining clearings rich in soft grasses and wildflowers.

Butterflies and other invertebrates love the sunny open areas where they constantly hunt for nectar hopping from flower to flower. Clumps of bramble provide shelter, nectar and berries, and even the humble thistle contributes with its pretty blue flower and has seeds which are loved by goldfinches. Along the north side of the meadow, hiding the large stream, there is a dense bank of blackthorn, bright with white flowers in spring.

The property is set just inside the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a designation that recognises the landscape quality and for which there is plenty of advice and information on maintaining wildflower meadows. Bridle Wood is real countryside. With this varied habitat and water nearby birdlife abounds - to hear the dawn chorus click here recorded at 5.00am on May 20th (sorry not Mac). They continue to sing!

Access

Bridle Wood is well away from any public road with the access along private tracks where there is a full right of way. From the parking place it's a pleasant walk of about 700 metres along a grass track and across a tiny stream, along another track then back over the stream.

Please park to one side of the metal gate by the 'for sale' sign - please do not park on the mown grass opposite.

History

The Saxons named the nearest town "Grinstead", meaning "the green place", and it's now known as East Grinstead. Worsted is certainly green although in the past lavender was grown on the sandy ground, showing purple against the green. For many years the ground supported horses as part of a racing stud, and old horse shoes turn up now and again.

Maps

The Ordnance Survey map, see link below, shows the area as open ground, click on the aerial option and the mixed vegetation will be seen.
