SOLD: Chloris Wood £185,000 Freehold

Description

A broadleaf woodland set deep in the Somerset countryside with charming woodland walks along a stream running through the wood. The deep gulley sheltering the stream provides the perfect hidden watering hole for all the creatures of the forest. To the west the ground levels out into an area of established broadleaf woodland made up of predominantly birch and oak. There are sizeable open grassy areas that make ideal camping clearings amongst the wildflowers and further into the wood glimpses of the rolling hills and farmland are visible through the trees to the east and south.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Trees

Wildlife

Chloris Wood forms part of a larger area of woodland known historically as Pink Wood. This is an important local wildlife area that continues to support thriving populations of deer, bird life and small woodland mammals. From the voles and rodents that populate the banks of the stream to the browsing roe deer and the woodland birds in the canopy where the tree cover supports a unique woodland ecosystem. The importance of this biodiversity is difficult to overstate in a time when so much of the surrounding land is given over to the pressures of commercial agriculture and food production.

Chloris was the ancient Greek Goddess of flowers and a nymph of the Islands of the Blessed. The Greek mythology of the wood nymph or dryad was a popular theme of 19th century English romantic poetry. Evoking the beauty of woodland it captured the mystical quality that inspired so much descriptive nature writing of the time.

Features

The interesting topography of Chloris Wood is due mainly as a result of the many centuries of water channelled through the trees and then continuing its way once beyond the wood to meet up with the river Brue that then flows through the town of Bruton. A myriad of animal activity converges at the waters edge to form well worn trails near the banks where this life giving artery has cut into the soft earth as it passes through.

Access, tracks and footpaths

Chloris Wood has the benefit of access at the northern end from a private woodland track but also direct from Pinkwood Lane along its eastern boundary where historic tracks provide an alternative access.

There are no public footpaths in this woodland but a number of old trails are still evident running through the wood providing good access to all parts on foot.

Local area and history

Nearby Bruton has a long history as a rural settlement by virtue of a strategic location alongside the river Brue, which takes its name from the old Celtic word 'briw' meaning vigour. This small market town offers plenty of opportunity for refreshment after days or nights spent enjoying the woods. There are good transport links via the A303 and the railway station that connects to the London mainline at nearby Castle Cary.

After a few hundred metres bear right onto Hutchin's Lane and proceed for a further few hundred metres until the road bears sharply to the right at Batt's Farm. From here continue down Pinkwood Lane for a few hundred metres until the gates and 'Woodlands For Sale' sign on your right.
