The Woodland is home all year round to many species of insects and mammals. The warm air of summer in the sheltered sunny clearings is ideal for numerous butterflies and insects and when autumn comes, deep, golden leaf litter provides important protective habitat before the arrival of spring. A thick summer tree canopy provides shelter from the heat and even the winter wood affords protection form the harshest conditions.

Access, tracks and footpaths

The access track provides good vehicle access all the way to a parking area within the boundary of Durle Wood. There is also a useful private track running through the centre of the wood and a footpath along the eastern boundary.

Local area and history

The wood takes its name from the old English name for present day village of Durley nearby. The village was also known alternatively as Durlye or Dyrle and had important connections for a time during the seventeenth century when Durley Manor Farm was home to the grand daughters of Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell. The village is now a quiet rural community with excellent access to the facilities and transport links of the nearby larger centres of Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester.

Leave the M27 at junction 7 and take the first exit from the roundabout into Charles Watts Way and then left at the next roundabout into Tolbar Way. Follow the road straight over a series of roundabouts through the retail park. Continue for a couple of miles, passing a car sales forecourt and Durley Primary School. The road then bears to the left and after a further 500 metres the turning into the woods is on your left where there is a locked gate.

Before viewing you can contact Daniel for the code for the red combination lock or park further along the road and walk along the track on foot.

Follow the woodland track straight on for approx 750 metres until reaching a large clearing where there is a portacabin. Turn right past this container and then left after a further 50 metres. Continue along the track for a further 250 metres and you will see the orange coloured boundary markings and name sign for Durle Wood on your right.
