SOLD: Fortescue Wood £75,000 Freehold

Description

There is little disturbance here except the melodic birdsong of the many species that have made this stunning woodland landscape their home.

This is a nature lovers' delight. The hidden clearings within the thick cover of the wood provides the perfect place to enjoy evenings around the campfire. From here the timeless spectacle of browsing deer, the call of the Barn Owl and the subtle sounds of the woodland at night can be enjoyed.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Trees

For centuries the stems of towering beech and oak have provided a safe habitat that is constantly evolving as the canopy changes over the generations. Now there is emerging self seeded birch, hazel and fir among the other species here to further enhance the diversity. Of particular note are the enormous beech trees that stand at the entrance to Fortescue Wood, creating an impressive protective canopy and clearing from which to explore further.

Wildlife

Roe and muntjac deer are often seen. Foxes, badgers and a host of other small mammals will share this wood with the new owner.

Features

An ancient earth bank bisects the wood and creates a distinct separation in character between the mixed deciduous trees and the mature stand of conifer at the eastern end. This mixed habitat creates important biodiversity as the ground flora varies enormously between the two parts of the wood.

Access, tracks and footpaths

The access track provides good vehicle access all the way to a parking area within the boundary of Fortescue Wood. A footpath runs along the western boundary.

Local area and history

Historically this area has been enjoyed by leading members of the clergy and the nobility due to its accessibility from the historic centres of church and state, Winchester and London.

Beyond the boundaries of Fortescue Wood neighbouring woodland is now enjoyed in private ownership. The wider surrounding area is made up of open countryside but with good access to local towns for essential supplies before a retreat to the woods.
