Dense cover amid the birch and holly
Set deep within the peaceful setting of rural Somerset, Half Moon Wood is a fascinating haven in which both wildlife and the woodland enthusiast can thrive. If approached sensitively then the enjoyment of the wood can be for the benefit of both. There is plenty here that can be done to enhance the habitat for wildlife from the simple provision of bird and bat boxes to the management of the tree cover and ground flora.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
There is a delightful mix of tree types within the wood. Not only is there a variety of species ranging from oak, birch, hazel and occasional conifer but planting in the recent past has created a woodland of varying stages of maturity. There are a number of quite large examples, where the spreading oak boughs have created natural clearings and eclipsed the growth beneath to establish themselves as king of the woods. Elsewhere younger trees compete for light in the race skyward. In this way there is plenty of scope here to steward this wood through to the next stage of maturity.
Open tracks into the wood and generous clearings beneath the spreading oak canopy make for fantastic views of both the surrounding hills and the beauty of the night sky when camping out in the woods. Half Moon Wood takes its name from this joy of the outdoors and the opportunity for aspiring woodland owners to realise these aims, made possible by woodlands.co.uk from their base at Half Moon Lane.
Access, tracks and footpaths
There is a decent hard parking area within the boundary accessed from a well made shared woodland track that runs to the entrance of Half Moon Wood. Once within the wood a series of cleared woodland rides run through the woods giving good access throughout.
Local area and history
Half Moon Wood is in a peaceful location amidst open farmland in the rolling south Somerset landscape. Nearby the town of Bruton provides everyday facilities. The town is well known for the ancient dovecote perched on the skyline that is now looked after by the National Trust. There are good transport links via the A303 and the railway station that connects to the London mainline at nearby Castle Cary.
Indicative boundaries are marked in red on posts and trees running through the wood to the north, east and west. To the south the boundary is the edge of the access track.

From the town of Bruton follow the A359 towards Frome until bearing right as you exit the town onto the Brewham Road. Continue out of the town with the railway line on your right hand side for a mile or so as the road becomes Pinkwood Lane and there is woodland on both sides of the road, After a further few hundred metres you will see a 'Woodlands For Sale' sign and metal entrance gates leading onto a woodland track.
These gates are kept locked but prospective purchasers can contact Daniel on 07780 900192 for the combination padlock code to allow vehicle access or can walk from this point taking care not to obstruct the gates.
Approaching from Frome and the north, head south on the A359 until a right turn at a rusty signpost reading 'North South' onto Hassock's Lane. After a few hundred yards bear right onto Hutchin's Lane and proceed for a further few hundred metres until the road bears sharply to the right at Batt's Farm. From here continue down Pinkwood Lane for a few hundred metres until the entrance gates and 'Woodlands For Sale' sign on your right.
Follow the woodland track up hill into the woods and refer to the plans below for the exact location of Half Moon Wood, which will be found after approximately 200 metres on your right.
