Description
Haven Wood is a mixed woodland where tall conifer at the entrance merges into established broadleaf woodland as you progress through to the north and east. There are some impressive specimens of oak along the northern edge where former hazel coppice and birch provide thick cover. Hidden clearings await discovery at the fringes of a delightful woodland brook that gurgles its way along the boundary. This distinctive feature is an important part of the woodland ecosystem, providing a vital clean water source for a variety of woodland mammals. It is also a rich breeding ground for insects that in turn are a crucial link at the beginning of the food chain for resident bats and birds.
Fallen trees create protected spaces for rearing of young, where thick tangled undergrowth and natural tree regeneration have made this a fascinating environment to explore. Some clearing and removal of firewood could allow space for additional planting and further regeneration.

Wildlife abounds. The occasional deer can often be seen grazing the grassy rides and clearings in the early morning or at dusk, creating important foraging habitat for bats and butterflies. The tree canopy high above is host to a huge variety of birdlife. An early visit will be rewarding with a chorus of birdsong and numerous insect species thrive beyond sight in the upper branches.
Access, tracks and footpaths
The woodland is well connected for Islanders and offers convenient access from the ferry terminal for foot passengers at Ryde Pier Head, (only a 22 minute crossing from Portsmouth Harbour!) Immediate onward passage to the wood is possible by train from Ryde Pier Head to Smallbrook Junction, which is then just a few minutes walk along a footpath to the edge of the wood. This offers a rare advantage of arriving at the woods without relying on the need for a car.
Driving is also a convenient option, in particular by ferry from Portsmouth Harbour to Fishbourne which is then only fifteen minutes or so to the wood.
The newly renovated track provides easy vehicle access to within the boundary of the wood. The wood is a private area and there are no public footpaths running through it.
Local area and history
The Isle of Wight (including the waters around the Island) is now a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The award was made by the United Nations Man and Biosphere Co-ordinating Council in Paris on the 19th June 2019. This status recognises that the Isle of Wight can demonstrate to the highest level that there is a balanced relationship between people and nature and, that in spite of the modern-day pressures brought about by the progress of human beings, nature continues to thrive here.

The Isle of Wight is easily accessed by ferry from Portsmouth (Fishbourne), Southampton (Cowes) and Lymington
(Yarmouth). Additional passenger only ferry services operate between Southampton and West Cowes and Portsmouth and Ryde. The nearest crossing point to the wood is Ryde. From here head south on the A3055 Brading / Sandown Road proceeding straight over the roundabout at Tesco supermarket as you leave the town. Continue for a further mile or so and then take the turning to Harding Shute on your right just after the 'Woodlands For Sale' board on the A3055. After a further 150 metres you will see the gate and signboard at the woodland entrance. This gate is kept locked for security but you can contact Daniel 07780 900192 for the code for the combination padlock. Please make sure this gate is kept secured during and after your visit.
There is plenty of space inside the gate to park and then enjoy the walk from here up the track through the surrounding woodland.
Follow the track straight ahead for 600 metres and as the track bears sharply round to the left continue for a further 80 metres and then turn sharply right. After a further 400 metres you will observe the pink coloured markings and name sign for Haven Wood as indicated on the plans provided with these particulars.
