Description
It is the variety of tree types and the ever changing pattern of the high canopy at Siskin Wood that offers such great variety of habitat. From the entrance an old logging track leads between ranks of mature conifer and connects a series of open clearings once dominated by some large oak specimens. Heading further into the wood the character changes entirely as the deep leaf litter and last throws of autumn gold cling to large oak, birch and hazel. This thick area of broadleaf woodland provides an important biodiversity within the wood that is so appealing for birdlife such as the siskin which can benefit from this mixed habitat and after which the wood is named.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Wild deer were hunted to extinction on the island in the middle of the nineteenth century but since the nineteen seventies a small population has established itself having swum across the Solent. Muntjac are the most numerous but there are also regular sightings of roe, fallow, sika and red deer. The relatively small numbers have enabled a healthy biodiversity of plant life and naturally regenerated woodland that can often be jeopardised by browsing deer where there is an over population. In sustainable numbers deer species are an important contributor to overall biodiversity and support interdependent plants, birds and insects.

The Isle of Wight is easily accessed by ferry from Portsmouth (Fishbourne), Southampton (Cowes) and Lymington
(Yarmouth). Additional passenger only ferry services operate between Southampton and West Cowes and Portsmouth and Ryde. The nearest crossing point to the wood is Ryde. From here head south on the A3055 Brading / Sandown Road proceeding straight over the roundabout at Tesco supermarket as you leave the town. Continue for a further mile or so and then take the turning into Harding Shute on your right just after the 'Woodlands For Sale' board on the A3055. After a further 150 metres you will see the gate and signboard at the wood entrance. This gate is kept locked for security but you can contact Daniel 07780 900192 for the code for the combination padlock. Please make sure this gate is kept secured during and after your visit.
There is plenty of space inside the gate to park and then enjoy the walk from here up the track through the surrounding Woodland.
Follow the track straight ahead for 600 metres and as the track bears sharply round to the left continue for a further 80 metres and then turn sharply right. After a further 400 metres you will observe the red coloured markings and name sign for Siskin Wood on your left as indicated on the plans provided with these particulars.
