SOLD: Tamarisk Wood £59,000 Freehold

  • Little London, Hurstbourne Tarrant, Hampshire
  • about 4 acres
  • Central England

Description

Upon arriving at the wood the tranquillity of the environment is at once apparent to the visitor. Follow the paths from the cleared parking area by the entrance, into the inviting interior. Here you will enter another world of forest creatures and woodland flora beneath a natural canopy of mature beech trees.

The White Admiral butterfly has been spotted fluttering through the wood catching the shafts of sunlight that filter through the tree canopy upon its translucent wings. Roe deer are also a common sight here. Sometimes referred to as the fairies of the wood these delicate deer are browsers and nibble on choice stems as they drift undisturbed through the woodland.

Tamarisk Wood is an ideal place in which to escape; this is a peaceful place to spend the night camping or to have family time away from all the hustle and bustle of modern day life, where childhood pursuits of woodland dens and insect hunting can be indulged.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Trees

Established beech trees are the predominant species at Tamarisk Wood. The dense leaves shelter the woodland grasses on the forest floor and creates open clearings, ideal for camping under this protective canopy. In the north east corner of the wood a thick stand of conifer and hazel coppice provides cover for deer and nesting birds.

Wildlife

Brilliant green coverings of soft moss clinging to old stumps and large flinty boulders give the wood its name from the common tamarisk moss, one of numerous native species of moss that can be found in the sheltered woodland environment. As you progress through the open wood towards the fringes, birch saplings and giant oak form a natural boundary and frame the delightful vista across the neighbouring fields of Bourne Park; a nearby country house.

Access, tracks and footpaths

The Brenda Parker Way runs along the northern boundary of Tamarisk Wood. This peaceful long distance walking trail runs across northern Hampshire and gives great access from Tamarisk Wood to some delightful hiking across neighbouring countryside.

Rights and covenants

This important woodland environment is protected by a Tree Preservation Order that protects Tamarisk Wood and the surrounding Woodland from inappropriate forestry practice. This does not preclude the process of normal woodland management but simply requires that all proposals are approved in advance by the local authority.

Local area and history

The countryside in this part of Hampshire is of great natural beauty. This idyllic farming landscape of sweeping vistas has retained a timeless charm that has remained unchanged for generations. Nearby Andover now offers a wide range of facilities, having originally grown to prominence during the eighteenth century as a coaching stopover for passengers passing through the area.

Directions

From the A303 leave at the Andover exit signed for the A343 and head north to Hurstbourne Tarrant and Newbury. A mile or so after passing through the village of Enham Alamein there is a turning on your right to Little London. If you are approaching from the north along the A343 then this turning is on your left about a mile or so after passing through the village of Hurstbourne Tarrant.

Continue down this country lane for about a mile until you reach Little London and then turn left into the village on a right hand bend. The road will then lead you through Little London, between the houses and then along a lane with woodland either side. After 500 metres you will reach the entrance to the woods on your left. The gate here is kept locked but you can park here to one side of the entrance and continue on foot straight along the woodland track. Tamarisk Wood is set deep within this larger area of woodland and you will need to allow plenty of time for your visit to get there.

Vehicular access rights will be given to the new owner.

Continue straight ahead along the track for 600 metres where, at the second crossroads of woodland tracks turn right and after 300 metres you will come across the entrance to Tamarisk Wood on your left.
