Description

Boldventure Wood was part of the Braddon Estate which originally included the 17th Century farmhouse still found near the access track.

The woodland was planted in the early 2000's as part of a shift to using coppiced timber to use as woodchip to power a woodchip boiler system. This system ceased to be used in recent years so the planted trees have remained untouched and have grown well into an attractive semi-mature broadleaved woodland.

The location is peaceful and is a good base for enjoying visits to the nearby north Devon coast.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Trees

Mixed broadleaved trees were planted here in well spaced rows. This allows good access through the trees and is ideal for any coppicing or thinning that may be carried out in the future.

A fantastic variety of species within the woodland includes oak, hazel, ash and alder interspersed with beech, hawthorn and poplar.

Rows of hazel have grown well and provide a supply of nice long poles, useful for hurdle making, pea sticks and for making walking sticks.

Wildlife

Surrounding Boldventure Wood are other woodlands and meadows, which include a local nature reserve. The variety of open landscape and natural habitat is a draw for bird life, native mammals and numerous flora and fauna.

Birds such as the chaffinch, robin, jay and 'jenny wren' all inhabit this tranquil place, enjoying the food supply of berries, seeds and nuts from the trees and plants such as bramble (Rubus fruticosus) with plentiful blackberries.

Deer hide within the denser, more hidden parts of the local landscape but can be seen within the woodland on occasion and there are signs of them using the woodland with there tracks known as racks.

Features

At the entrance is a private stoned hard standing idea for parking when visiting.

Along the eastern side of the woodland is an old hedge bank.

Access, tracks and footpaths

Boldventure Wood benefits from access over a concrete road from the public highway which then becomes a stoned forestry track suited for most vehicles for year round use.

There are no public rights of way within the woodland.

Sporting rights are in hand.

Activities

Ripe for a rotation of small scale coppicing, planted hazel has grown well and could be useful materials for hazel hurdle making as well as other green woodworking crafts.

Enjoy nature by making a small wildlife hide which could also double up as a shelter.

Camp with family and friends under the stars and enjoy an open air breakfast over a campfire.

Local area and history

An idilic rural position is enjoyed by Boldventure Wood, nestled within the beautiful North Devon countryside within the parish of Ashwater. Despite the peaceful location, the A30 is accessible and to the north the market town of Holsworthy is only a few miles away whilst the popular North Cornwall surfing beaches lie 15 miles to the west, offering opportunities for surfing and bodyboarding along with walking, sailing and fishing.

The local village of Ashwater is within walking distance and provides a pub, community shop, post office and church.

Directions

- Take the A30 and from either westbound or eastbound leave at the junction at Stowford Cross signposted to Roadford Lake as well as Broadwoodwidger & Bratton Clovelly.

- Turn left at the T-junction if you are coming off eastbound from the A30 or right at the T-junction if coming off westbound from the A30, each way will be signposted to Broadwoodwidger & Roadford Lake.

- Stay on this road for 5 miles, crossing the stunning landscape of Roadford Lake until you get to Ivyhouse Cross where you turn left.

- Turn immediately left at Reservoir Cross towards Ashwater.

- Stay on this road for 3 miles, going through Ashmill, until you see a farm lane on your right signposted to Braddon & East Venn.

- Turn right onto the farm lane and take the left turn at the first fork towards the Braddon Estate.

- After around 100 metres look out for the old metal gates on you left indicating the old entrance of the estate and continue along this track until you come to a T junction.

- Stay on the main concrete track here, turning right and then at almost immediately at another fork in the track follow the concrete track right into the old courtyard of the estate. Please drive with care here.

- Head through the courtyard, out into an open field and head down the hill on a stoned forestry track.

- Follow this track around to the left, along for around 150 metres and then continue along the track around to the right.

- Keep on this long straight part of the stoned forestry track, passing a large lake on your right, until it turns left at the end.

- Continue along this track for another 400 metres until you see the entrance to Boldventure Wood on your left with the 'Boldventure Wood' name sign on and parking area.

- Entering the woodland head right along the grassy rides. To the left is the southern edge is where there is a wet woodland habitat.
