The trees within Eglos Wood were mostly planted around 1990 after the previous woodland was damaged by the great storm. The woodland now thrives with character with paths winding through the established trees, open glades and along the south western edge a useful open track. This track provides access for timber management as well as for parking.

Set 170 metres above sea level, Eglos Wood is a level woodland, ideal for overnight camping.

Eglos Wood takes its name from the word for 'church' in the Cornish language. The local village of Egloskerry has the uplifting meaning of the 'church of love'.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Trees

Tree species found within Eglos Wood include beech, oak, sweet chestnut, sycamore and willow.

Wildlife

At dusk the woodland bursts to life as owls swoop through the trees and smaller birds chatter to each other as they find somewhere quiet to roost for the night.

Badgers trundle along the track, stopping on occasion to 'snuffle' for an earthworm or beetle while foxes prowl within and around the woodland. Bats also make use of the open forest track as a corridor when they leave their roosts to go and look for food.

Roe deer are often seen, these secretive shy creatures are always a joy to encounter.

Features

There is a good private track at the south western corner of the woodland that gives ample areas for parking.

Along the southern boundary is a small old tree-lined hedge bank.

At the centre of the woodland there is an open glade with a rustic picnic table that is a great spot to sit and experience the ambience of this peaceful environment.

Access, tracks and footpaths

Excellent road links from the A30 via the A395, from which you turn off and then a well kept stoned track leads you to the main access gate.

The purchaser will receive a key for this access gate and once inside the woodland a stoned forest track takes you all the way to the entrance of the woodland.

Rights and covenants

Such is the importance of this natural environment that it carries a special local authority Tree Preservation Order designation aimed at ensuring its continued existence as an important area of woodland. This will also encourage good woodland management practice as the local Forestry Commission representative and Local Authority Tree Officer are on hand to advise on how best to achieve this.

Enjoy days out with family and friends sharing picnics, climbing trees and whittling around a camp fire.

If you need a more tranquil experience then sling a hammock around a couple of trees and immerse yourself in this beautiful natural environment.

Local area and history

Having once formed part of the Tregeare Estate, the surround area of Eglos Wood is steeped in history. An earthworks at nearby Tregearedown Beacon dates back to the Iron Age. There are records of Tregeare as a surname in this area as far back as 1284 formed from the Cornish word for dwelling (Tre) and fort, or castle town (caer).

Tregeare House was built in the late 1700's by Joseph Baron, a family that had lived in the nearby village of Egloskerry (Cornish for ‘Church of Keri). This village was once given away by the first Norman King of England, William the Conquerer, to his half brother Robert Moreton, the Earl of Cornwall.

Eglos Wood is well located with easy access the stunning north Cornish coast with the surfing beaches of Crackington Haven and Widemouth within a half hour drive. The coastal town of Bude has 2 magnificent beaches. The fishing port of Boscastle is a must see, where you can also visit the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic.

Directions

- Leave the A30 at the Kennards House Junction signposted to the A395/Wadebridge/Camelford/A39.

- You will then need to join the A395 towards North Cornwall and Camelford/Wadebridge.

- Once on the A395 travelling towards Camelford, continue for around 3 miles, passing through the village of Pipers Pool.

- Shortly after you leave the village look out for a turn on your right into a wooded area by the sign for 'West Down End' where you will see a 'woodlands for sale' sign.

- Drive carefully along the access track passing 'South Lodge' and continue for around 400 metres until you see a gateway on your left with a 'woodlands for sale' sign. Park here to view the woodland.

- Climb carefully over the gate. Walk along the track for around 150 metres until you see the 'Eglos Wood' name sign in front of you where you can access a cut path along the western side of the woodland.
