Gogwell Wood is a manageably sized woodland in a sheltered setting on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, a perfect location for exploring this stunning part of the country.

The woodland is tucked away from any major roads or towns yet within an easy drive from the A30. Access is good from a quiet country lane and then via well made woodland tracks.

Benefitting from a slightly south facing aspect, Gogwell Wood gets plenty of light year round. The light aspect of the woodland has encouraged growth of the trees which include oak, hazel, ash and other broadleaved species planted around 18 years ago. The trees are growing well having now formed a woodland canopy and are nearing the point where they could have their first thinning, providing a valuable source of timber for firewood or small scale forestry projects.

Triangular in shape, the northern and eastern boundaries are tree lined hedge-banks, this could make an interesting hedge laying project for the woodland purchaser. Hedge laying is a traditional way of managing boundaries, often for livestock but also provides excellent wildlife corridors for small mammals and birds. Along the open area and woodland fringes butterflies are plentiful including the Ringlet. Lager mammals seen include both red and roe deer, stoats, badgers and foxes.

Set deep in the wood in a clearing is a bench, whilst visiting do take some time to sit here and take in the atmosphere, a more peaceful setting would be hard to find.

Gogwell is a locally found surname which is derived from the words 'Gog' meaning Cuckoo and 'Well' meaning field. Cuckoo's field reflects the fact that the Cuckoo has been heard for many years around Dartmoor. The Cuckoo is infamous for laying its eggs in other birds’ nests to then leave the adopted parents to bring up its young. On the moor the adopted parents tend to be Meadow Pipits, Skylarks, Wrens, and Yellowhammers. The familiar 'cuckoo' calls that the Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) make when they arrive in the UK from Africa as part of their annual migration is one of the many joys of spring. The Cuckoo is currently a red list species in the UK, meaning it is in threat of extinction.

Within a short cycle ride you can join the Granite Way cycle trail that is a pleasurable journey between the beautiful village of Lydford and the market town of Okehampton. Both of these locations have their own castles so are great for historical days out.

To the south east of the woodland is Dartmoor National Park - a stunning 368 square miles of protected wild moorland and deep river valleys. Nearby are the stunning attractions of Sourton Tor and Gren Tor.

There are also good links to the north Cornwall coasts and beaches with the seaside resort of Bude within a 30 minute drive.

  • Leave the A30 dual carriageway at Sourton Cross (signed to Plymouth, Tavistock & Bideford)
  • If travelling from the east, turn right at the end of the slip-road, then almost immediately left. If travelling from the west, turn right at the end of the slip-road, under the dual-carriageway and then right again
  • After about 200 yards, immediately after the slip-road taking you back onto the A30 west-bound, take the right turn signed to Cowsen & Week
  • Follow this road for about 1 1/4 miles to a crossroads (Hardhill Cross)
  • Go straight ahead at the crossroads and after about 1/2 mile, shortly after crossing a small bridge on a left-hand bend, you will see the entrance gateway to the woodlands on your right, with 'woodlands for sale' boards prominently displayed
  • Park by the gate, taking care not to block the gateway (the buyer will be provided with a key for vehicular access)
  • To the left of the gate, go over the low fence and cross the small footbridge over a ditch.
  • Follow the stone track up through the woodlands, bearing left at a green shipping container
  • Continue up the track for a further 100 metres or so to a point where the track passes through a gap in the hedge-banks and then up the track for another 200 metres to a T-junction in the track.
  • At this T-junction turn left and carry on along this forest track, passing a gateway with 'Highwaymans Wood' name sign on, and continue to the end where you turn left into an open gateway onto a stone track.
  • Just through this gateway on the left hand side you will see the entrance to the woodland indicated by a 'Gogwell Wood' name sign.
  • Satnav/GPS note: the postcode EX20 4NQ is for Rixton Farm, the point shown by the red dot on the two location maps, immediately to the west of the woodlands.
