SOLD: St Germanus Wood £55,000 Freehold

St Germanus Wood is a good sized woodland with plenty of scope for family enjoyment. Gently sloping with excellent access, the woodland mainly consists of semi mature conifer trees giving the woodland a very private feel.

Around the perimeter is a cleared track, ideal for a stroll around your boundaries. This track is bordered by a mature hedge bank that runs around most of the woodland. As well as giving addition privacy, this hedge bank contains numerous species of native broadleaved trees providing a wildlife corridor, this is evidenced by the numerous hazel nuts scattered around that have been nibbled by wood mice and squirrels. Beyond the hedge is open farmland, where sheep graze throughout most of the year.

St Germanus Wood benefits from a good stone track and private parking area making it ideal as a base for staying overnight in a campervan or medium sized motor home. Adjoining the parking area is an open grassy glade. The glade acts as a sun-trap, warm and sheltered on three sides with a purpose built picnic bench. This is the perfect spot to sit and enjoy time around a campfire.

St Germanus Wood is named after Saint Germanus of Auxerre, Burgundy, France, and is how the nearby village of Germansweek came about its name, possibly due to a visit from Germanus in the 5th Century. He is said to have lead native Britons to victory against Saxon pirates by putting himself in charge of the Christians, leading them to a vale between two hills and ordering the army of Britons to shout 'Alleluia' upon his command. The reverberating call in unison is said to have given the pirates the impression of a much larger army and ensuring they fled from battle.

Apart from the occasional farm vehicle passing along the lane to the west of the woodland, birdsong is likely to be all you will hear. Foxes, badgers and deer are all in evidence within the woodland.

Nearby, Roadford Lake has much to offer water sports enthusiasts as well as a visitor centre which tells the story of how a whole valley (and village) was flooded to create this vast reservoir. There is also a restaurant at Roadford, while the Clovelly Inn in nearby Bratton Clovelly is well known locally for its pub grub.
