Horsegill Wood - SOLD, Cumbria - Over 4 ½ acres, £39,000

Horsegill Wood - SOLD

Taking its name from the swiftly flowing stream that is a major feature of this wood, Horsegill Wood is a paradise for the naturalist.

Although the subtle footprint of ancient tracks and overgrown coppice stools give clues to the presence of man, Mother Nature has done a fine job of reclamation. Most of the native broadleaf species indigenous to the north of England are represented here. Amongst the oaks, sycamores and ash are some truly ancient woodland giants. Holly, birch, hazel and alder fill the lower levels and an impressive variety of smaller plants carpet the wood floor which, come Spring, will burst forth with splendour.

Steep sided and marshy in parts, the wood has numerous dry flat areas which would be ideal spots for wildlife observation, perhaps the creation of an observation hide or a camping ground for an overnight stay. Evidence of the presence of roe deer abounds in the wood and as dusk falls the bark of the bucks is confirmation enough. Nuthatch, goldcrest, wren, great tit, blue tit and wagtail, all frequent the middle storey while above, wheeling buzzards keep a watchful eye. The threatened red squirrel still has refuge here and a local group helps promote its survival.

A fertile imagination could picture the scene, long ago, when the girt dog of Ennerdale terrorised these very woods before meeting its end nearby. In more recent times the locality was known for production of high grade iron ore or haematite. The many coppiced hazel stools show that this woodland was harvested in support of this now bygone activity.

Horsegill flows roughly North to South through the wood and supports a rich variety of damp loving plants. Dippers bob on exposed rocks before plunging into the current in search of a meal. Hard fern and mosses compete for space with horsetail, an ancient plant whose ancestors flourished here and led to the formation of the rich coal bearing rocks found in the area.

A visit to the wood is highly recommended; a leisurely wander through would delight the conservationist and the naturalist alike. Rarely is woodland seen in this natural and diverse condition.

Locally: With the charming village of Ennerdale bridge less than four miles away, this is a quiet and little-visited corner of the Lake district. Nearby, Ennerdale Water is rated as Cumbria's most secluded lake. However there are plenty of B&Bs and pubs serving the local community and the St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay coast to coast path which passes to the north of the wood.

Sporting rights: These are owned and included with the land along with the fishing rights.

Access: A locked gateway leads off a quiet country lane along a solid track, where there is a full right of way (suitable for most cars) to the woodland entrance, leading to internal paths, clearings and a timber stacking area and vehicle turning point.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
