Oldford Wood - SOLD, Cumbria - Over 2⅓ acres, £35,000

Oldford Wood - SOLD

Oldford Wood is located right on the northern edge of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, just a few miles as the crow flies from the very scenic Ennerdale Water. The River Ehen is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest SSSI as it is the habitat for the rare Freshwater Pearl Mussel and forms part of the south eastern boundary of the wood. The river is also the boundary to the National Park.

Having approximately 65 metres of river frontage, Oldford Wood offers the opportunity for the new owner to enjoy fishing or just spending time by their very own bit of river bank amongst the dappled shade of their woods. The river is home to a wealth of wildlife, such as the black darter dragonflies which patrol up and down the banks. The River Ehen is classed as a spate river and can, on the right day, offer superb fishing for runs of Sea Trout and Atlantic Salmon. Timing of the runs is very water dependent. For salmon fishing the best time to fish is from August onwards to the end of October. You can get more information from The local fishing club.

Oldford Wood has the feel of being a very established wood and is recorded as being Ancient Semi Natural Woodland which means it has been woodland since at least 1600, when reliable records began. The canopy consists of a number of species including ash, alder and some very large impressive oak trees. The understory consists mainly of hazel with other young trees. The history of the wood is mostly unknown, however there is evidence in the wood and the surrounding area of it being managed by a coppice worker for charcoal production and the hazel has been coppiced for material for traditional crafts. In the early 1800s a very unusual wild animal killed 300-400 local sheep. Known locally as the 'Girt Dog of Ennerdale' and thought to probably be a Thylacine or Tasmanian Tiger. It was finally tracked down and killed in this valley as it emerged from the River Ehen.

The open areas within the wood and the edges of the paths and tracks have a wide range of plants and flowers. Walking through the woods in spring and summer you are rewarded with swathes of campion, stitchwort, verbena and meadowsweet. Common spotted orchids also pop up along the river bank. There are also more unusual plant species like sanicle and yellow pimpernel. These plants attract a variety of insects including the beautiful velvet brown ringlet butterflies.

Sitting down by the river you can find yourself surrounded by small flocks of birds; nuthatch, goldcrest, wren, great tit and blue tits all feed noisily on the mossy trunks.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
