Description
Standing around 100 metres above sea level, Golden Hill Wood sits upon the upper fringes of the dominant landscape around what is known as 'Hangman's Hill' - the far reaching views having shown people in the past what may happen to them if they were law breakers.
The planted trees have generally grown well and can be thinned out with an appropriate thinning license from the Forestry Commission, providing a useful amount of timber, ideal with the rising cost of fuel.
This wood is a true haven for peaceful relaxation and wildlife.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
Trees
Planted around 25 years ago as commercial woodland with mixed conifer trees such as larch, douglas fir and spruce. These trees have grown well to form a canopy of trees and are now ready for thinning, providing a good source of timber for either the woodland owner or for local timber markets.
There is an old hedge bank around the northern and the majority of the eastern edge of this woodland with some amazing older trees such as beech, oak and ash.
Throughout the woodland are naturally growing broadleaved trees that include rowan, beech and ash.
Wildlife
A variety of birds enjoy the peaceful location, with species such siskins and goldcrests feeding from the seeds of the conifer trees.
Foxes frequent the area as well as other mammals including deer, badgers and wood mice.
The open clearing is ideal habitat for slow worms to bask in the early morning sun.
Features
The most impressive feature of Golden Hill Wood are the views over the rolling Devonshire hills to the north. Sit under the old knarled tree shown on the plan of the woodland and take in this classic landscape.
A good sized clearing is perfect for family camping and picnics on the rustic picnic table.
At the northern boundary is a small old quarry which has now becomed filled with trees and shrubs.
Access, tracks and footpaths
Access to the woodland is via a quiet country lane that leads to the entrance gate. Once inside there is a stoned forestry track which leads all the way to the parking area and entrance of the woodland.
There are no public rights of way within the woodland.
Activities
The open clearing at the heart of the woodland provides a perfect place for family days out and weekend camping trips.
Observing nature can be enhanced by installing a small wildlife hide. It is amazing just how close wild animals will come when you are hidden and quite.
Locally there are a number of footpaths and bridleways given plenty of scope for enjoying countryside walks and bike rides.
Within a 30 - 40 minute drive are some of the best surfing beaches in the UK, including Woolcombe and Croyde Bay.

The woodland is situated just west of Swimbridge. Swimbridge is a village, and former manor in Devon. It is situated 4 miles south-east of Barnstaple. The woodland is approximately 5 miles from the town of Barnstaple which is a fantastic place to explore the best of the north Devon coast with fantastic beaches such as Croyde and Woolacombe which is also great to explore a new or existing hobby of surfing.

Directions
- From Exeter follow the A377 north until you nearly reach Bishops Tawton, where at Codden Hill Cross you need to take a sharp right turn signposted towards Cobbaton and Chittlehampton.
- If you are joining the A377 from the north at Barnstaple then follow the A377 south through the village of Bishops Tawtonand upon leaving the village take the left turn towards Cobbaton and Chittlehampton.
- Follow this road for about 1 mile until the crossroads by the white cottage on your left, where you turn off left, following the sign towards Hannaford.
- Stay on this raid for about half a mile until you come to Hearson Cross, where you turn left signposted towards Bableigh, Hannaford & Venn.
-Stay on this road for about 500 metres, following the signs to Bableigh, Venn & Landkey and you will see the entrance gate to the woodland on you right with a 'woodlands for sale' sign on it.
- Park outside the gate and climb carefully over the gate or fence.
- Follow the track in front of you, straight on, passing a track on your right heading down through the trees, and follow round to the right and up the hill to the top area.
- Continue down the track for about 120 metres to the shared parking area where you will find the entrance to Golden Hill Wood in front of you indicated by a ride stop with a 'Golden Hill Wood' name sign upon it.
