Heathcoat Wood is set within a secluded valley near the village of Stoodleigh in the heart of Devon. The woodland forms part of a wooded valley that surrounds the fast flowing clean waters of Parkhouse Water. Along the eastern edge of Heathcoat Wood flows a stream that is spring fed from Stoodleigh moor to the north.

Access to the woodland is straight forward from the A396 and then via a charming, winding country lane. You will already know you are away from all the hustle and bustle of modern day life by the time you reach the main entrance gate. From there through other areas of privately owned woodland a stoned forestry track leads to the entrance of Heathcoat Wood.

There are two sections to the woodland on each side of the forestry track: to the east of the track is a mature woodland with stream frontage. Here you will find a bench, when visiting do take some time to sit and contemplate whilst listening to the abundant birdlife. The mature spruce trees here are ideally suited for firewood or small scale forestry projects. To the north there is also an area of mature broadleaved trees with a hazel understory. Hazel makes idea pea sticks for the garden.

At the western side of the forestry track is a towering forest, predominantly of Douglas fir trees planted around 1965. There is a plateau at the base of this area which is a great place for camping overnight or for creating a work station for timber projects. The far western side of Heathcoat Wood can be accessed by a track which begins at the woodland entrance.

As well as some amazing tree specimens within the woodland and the beautiful spring fed stream, Heathcoat Wood is also a gem of a place for wildlife enjoyment. Numerous birds inhabit the woodland environment including Long-tailed tits, Great tits and Wrens. A family of roe deer can often be seen grazing on the woodland floor or drinking from the stream. The area is also used by the majestic red deer, a fantastic sight.

Heathcoat Wood takes its name from the textile factory at the nearby market town of Tiverton. The factory was founded by John Heathcoat in 1808 and was a result of a relocation after his factory in Leicestershire was destroyed by Luddites, possibly under the pay of a rival factory!

These days the factory makes textiles for many different industries including the Military, Fire brigade and Olympian skiers.

The local area is quiet and very pleasant with country lanes winding through small villages. Exmoor National Park is within easy reach and the stunning north Devon coast with its popular surfing beaches of Croyde or Woolacombe. Whilst Westward Ho! is within a 45 minute drive.

The market town of Tiverton is within a short drive and has many facilities including shops and a leisure centre with a swimming pool.

- From the market town of Tiverton, travel north from the A361 onto the A396 towards Bampton.

- After approximately 3 miles take the left turn towards Stoodleigh over the Iron Bridge.

- Take the first left hand turn after crossing the bridge signposted to Washfield.

- Take care along this narrow lane.

- After around 1.5 miles you come to a sharp left hand bend with houses to your left and right. Look out for the entrance to Pond House on your right and a ‘woodlands for sale’ sign just before a wooden gate.

- Go through the wooden gate just after the ‘woodlands for sale’ sign, PLEASE CLOSE THE GATE BEHIND YOU. This is the shared access track to the woodland.

- Continue along the stone track, heading through another wooden gate and keep going until you reach another wooden gate at the far side of the field where you will see a 'woodlands for sale' sign.

- Go through this gate, again please close the gate behind you.

- Take the track to the left and follow the stone track through the woodland taking care not to drive near the edges.

- You will see the boundary for Heathcoat Wood after about 300 metres indicated by a line of fence posts with green markings.

- You can park here where there is a parking space on your left and right to view the woodland on the eastern side of the main access track which includes the stream.

- You carry also carry on along the main track for another 200 metres until you come to a turning area where you will see the main entrance to Heathcoat Wood on your left indicted by a 'Heathcoat Wood' name sign.
