Preachers Wood - SOLD, Devon - Over 3 ½ acres, £49,000

Preachers Wood - SOLD

Preachers Wood really is a gem with an interesting mix of mature broadleaved trees including oak, sweet chestnut, ash, birch, cherry, hazel and hawthorn. The woodland sits about 140 metres above sea level on the upper reaches of the rolling countryside upon the fringes of Dartmoor National Park.

The trees are well spaced allowing plenty of light onto the ground floor where woodland flowers such as dog's mercury thrive in the early spring. There is a good internal track and a level glade giving plenty of space for vehicles, ideal for camping or to install a small forestry store..

An attractive stream that flows along most of the northern and western boundaries. The crystal clear water has an aurora of calm and is a useful source of water for the woodland owner.

A bench set within the large trees is a great place for observing wildlife. Greater spotted wood peckers skirt between upper branches of the chestnut trees whilst deer graze around the woodland edge. Foxes and badger are also present.

Preachers Wood is named after the local feature known as the 'Preachers pit'. It is an old collapsed cavern around 12 metres deep and up to 50 metres wide which was used by the Presbyterian clergyman William Yeo and his supporters who would meet at night to worship there after losing his post for refusing to acknowledge the post-Restoration Act of Uniformity. He was effectively an outlaw at this time as there were rewards offered for anyone who found him and his followers during worship. He was finally allowed to preach publicly again via the Act of Toleration 1689 when his house was certified as a place to worship.

Access to Preachers Wood is via a stoned forestry track suited to year round use. As well as the magnificent surroundings of Dartmoor, there are numerous other interesting places near to the woodland, from the ancient stannary town of Ashburton to the market town of Bovey Tracey as well as the wonders of the National Park of Dartmoor. For the more adventurous the nearby coastal Torbay has numerous beaches and activities.

There are good links to many of these either by local buses or the recently opened cycle paths allowing safe off-road cycling to Newton Abbot and links to mainline and local trains.

Particulars and plans were prepared by our local manager, Stuart Brooking.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
