Intake Wood is a woodland of great beauty as well as being of a more easily managed size, set in the beautiful Staffordshire countryside, surrounded by rolling pasture and pockets of woodland. The trees are deciduous species and there are a number of very special old trees that have reached a truly magnificent size. The origins of this woodland are set far back in history.

The peace and tranquillity of the location and its size, mean that Intake Wood is an ideal location to escape the everyday, unwind and get back to nature.

With the diversity of species and varied age structure amongst the trees, there are many younger follow on trees beneath the veteran oak, sweet chestnut, beech, and sycamore. A dense holly understorey, present in patches, grows well beneath a few larger holly trees too, creating excellent privacy and screening the wood from the nearby B-road, as well as providing evergreen cover for wildlife.

Birch and rowan trees can also be found in the wood and on the woodland floor, there is a wonderful mix of native ferns, together with patches of bramble and bracken. The twining stems of honeysuckle with their heavily fragranced flowers, seek to climb into the canopy above.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Intake Wood is a haven for wildlife, the former owner having put up a number of bird boxes which are regularly used. There are many nesting opportunities amongst the crevices and hollows in the large old trees too. Sitting quietly in the wood, it's possible to observe many bird species such as robins, blackbirds, blue tits, great tits and wrens as well as some of the less frequently seen species such as nuthatches and treecreepers. Dear also pass through the wood, including red and roe.

Access, tracks and footpaths

The woodland has its own gate leading off from the lane (Belmont Road), opposite the entrance to Belmont Farm. There is space to park here and a trackway then leads up into the wood. Access on foot is possible throughout the wood.

There are no public rights of way within the wood.

The sporting rights are included in the sale.

Intake Wood could be a great base for exploring the local surroundings. Some flat areas could be used for occasional family camping.

For wildlife enthusiasts, maintaining and erecting new bird boxes as well as bat boxes could be a good project.

Some additional foot-routes could be made through the holly.

Local area and history

The wood is located close to the village of Ipstones, in the Stafforshire Moorlands, set in the foothills of the Pennines, just outside the Peak District National Park.

Places of note in the local area include Biddulph Grange (National Trust) with its stunning restored gardens and, about seven miles away, the Alton Towers Resort theme park.

Ipstones dates from around the 12th century and is surrounded by small farms and rolling countryside. Lots of good local produce is available in the area both from driveway ‘honesty boxes’ and local shops and hostelries.

  • Travel south east from Leek on the A523.
  • After 3 miles turn left onto the B5053 signed for Ipstones.
  • Continue past the shop and pub in the centre of the village before turning right on to the Belmont Road.
  • Procced for approximately one mile before arriving at the turn to Belmont Farm and a pond on the left of the road with Intake wood entrance opposite. please ensure that you do not park on the Belmont Farm road. Pull in to the side of the road or in front of the Intake Wood entrance gate. Climb the gate to view.
