They can be contacted by email liz@woodlands.co.uk or phone 07970 116 515 . ## DescriptionSaw Mill Plantation is a small self-contained woodland, located between Wakefield and Barnsley and is a nice manageable size ideal for family forestry and conservation projects.
Situated on level ground, the woodland floor is quite clear giving easy access beneath mature trees. Populated with a mix of beech, sycamore, larch, birch and oak as well the odd lime tree and a few sweet chestnuts, the wood is very attractive. There are a number of hazel coppice stools growing beneath the canopy forming a shrub layer adding further to the diversity. The broad mixture of species and diverse understory would suggest that this is a woodland of some age.
The flat topography gives way at the western end to a small quarry area and in the Spring, the wood is awash with a thick carpet of bluebells, dotted through with some bramble and ivy.

### WildlifeLinking to several nearby areas of woodland, Saw Mill Plantation has many species of bird visiting the wood: many also find suitable nesting sites in the Spring, through Summer. Birds likely to be sighted include the tit family, nuthatches, treecreepers, greater spotted woodpeckers, pheasant and wood pigeon.
The nearby pond attracts mallard and geese are often seen passing over the wood, moving between local wetlands and grazing, especially in the Autumn. The surrounding patchwork of fields make ideal habitat for buzzards, which thankfully are now common in the area.
### FeaturesAccess to the wood is directly from a minor B-road, through a metal field gate in to the wood where there is space to park a couple of vehicles.

There are good opportunities for providing a domestic firewood supply and carrying out woodland crafts.
### Local area and historyThe wood is just south of Newmillerdam Country Park, now owned and managed by Wakefield Council. Once called Thurstonhaugh, an old Norse name, the area became known as New Mylle on Dam when a new corn-mill was built around 1285.
The country park was once part of an estate which was owned by the Pilkington family. In the 1870's the family built nine lodges to house the gamekeepers who protected the site from poachers. Two lodges can still be seen today guarding the Dam. The Boathouse was built in the 1820's as a venue for entertaining friends and family, with the men often shooting wildfowl on the lake from punts launched from the Boathouse and ladies joining them for lunch!
A number of other country parks and estates are located close by; Woolley Hall, Anglers and Rabbit Ings - great places for recreation and wildlife as well as the world-renowned Yorkshire Sculpture Park which is less than 10 minutes away.
