Description
As the planted ancient woodland (PAWS) designation suggests, there has been woodland at this location for hundreds of years. As a result, there is a good seedbank of native broadleaved tree species throughout the wood.
There are three distinct character areas within Wahl Wood, with much to offer an enthusiastic owner. Near the eastern edge of the wood, the ridestop entrance continues on as a wide ride, demarking the edge of the first section, a strip of lovely native broadleaf woodland with coppice stools of oak and some hazel, along with beech, ash and sycamore. This area is carpeted with bluebells and native ferns and the ride contains patches of blackberry and wild raspberry.
The second and larger part of the wood, is planted with Corsican pine (or black pine), growing straight and tall and ready for the next thin. This is a good quality timber and can be useful for both firewood and construction projects. Beneath the pine grows rowan, oak, birch, sycamore and goat willow along with the odd holly bush. Letting a little more light in could really bring on these broadleaved trees.
Along the northern edge, a wide swathe was cut some time ago and natural regeneration has filled the space with oak, birch and rowan seedling trees. These native trees will develop into the type of woodland that was originally here, alongside a few old characterful oaks which have been retained. The ground flora is bracken, bramble and ferns mixed with bluebells and grasses and this part of the wood is very popular with resident birdlife, bees and butterflies which flourish in this kind of woodland edge habitat.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
Trees
Predominantly Corsican pine, oak, birch, rowan, sycamore, with some beech, ash, holly and hazel.
Wildlife
Plenty of birdlife is resident in the wood, wrens, chiffchaffs, blackbirds and robins provide the perfect forest soundtrack in breeding season and tree creepers and several varieties of tit can be observed moving through the canopy seeking insect food.
Features
The wood is relatively level with an overgrown ride leading through the pines to an open area on the northern edge.
A ditch forms the northern boundary and there is a golf course beyond this.
Access, tracks and footpaths
A peaceful and accessible woodland, ideal for birdwatching and getting close to nature. The new owner might like to increase nesting and roosting opportunities by putting up bird and bat boxes. In the open areas, some additional planting could be carried out and some careful management could help to encourage the native tree seedlings to flourish.

The wood name Wahl meant 'farm worker', in old English. Walton is a common old English word meaning 'farmstead of the Britons'.

- From M1 junction 29 take the A617 signed to Chesterfield.
- Follow the A617 dual carriage way for about 4 miles and at the next roundabout take the first exit onto the A61 signed to Derby and Matlock.
- Continue on the A61, after passing the Tesco Express turn right at the traffic lights sign posted for Matlock (A632) and Buxton (A619).
- Follow this road up the hill and at the roundabout take the second exit onto the A632 signed to Matlock.
- Pass Walton Hospital on the left.
- Continue up hill and at the traffic lights go straight on past the Texaco garage.
- Follow the A632 Matlock Road for about 1½ miles until you reach a ‘Woodlands for Sale’ sign on the left. Pull in here and park ensuring the gated access is left clear.
- On foot now, climb the stile and follow the farm track for about 400 metres until the gate into Walton woods is reached.
- Wahl Wood is approximately 600 metres along the track and to the left.
