Crith Wood, a particularly attractive woodland, is part of a wider woodland known as Drumtassie Woods and are proving very popular. There is a very convenient direct entrance off the quiet public road, ensuring that there are no future shared maintenance costs for tracks.

An area hardstanding has been improved to enable vehicle turning or for timber stacking, with a lockable gate to ensure security.

The woods were established by the Forestry Commission and were planted with a valuable mix of hardwoods and larch; this has been planted intelligently with shrubby species such as hazel planted on the periphery and a mixture of larch, cherry, sycamore and oak, amongst others, predominating towards the centre.

Two gas wayleaves bisect the wood, and would be perfect to establish as traditional meadowland, and although there are already a profusion of wild flowers within this area, even more could be easily done to broaden the invertebrate diversity. There are simple restrictions on heavy plant digging along the route of the buried pipeline for obvious reasons, however there are no restrictions on further planting or for the siting of polytunnels or similar temporary structures along this route.

The woods are of a size now that judicious thinning will provide a good supply of sustainable firewood and allow light onto the woodland floor, which in turn increases diversity and is the cornerstone of a healthy woodland.

A valuable and attractive highlight of Crith Wood is the strong and fast running stream that flows along the northern boundary; over a long period of time the course of the stream has altered, resulting in a section of the stream that is under the title of the neighbouring farmer, as can be seen on the accompanying map. This line has been marked on the ground with a number of free standing posts.

Surrounding Area:

The woods at Drumtassie lie closest to the small village of Avonbridge, its Gaelic name being Drochaid Abhainne quite literally 'bridge of the river'. Early history suggests that the river was forded here by cattle drovers coming south and later the village was home to a brickworks and a small open cast mine. Further afield lies the small town of Armadale another mining town with the land being rich in coal and ironstone.

The woods are within easy reach of Stirling , Glasgow and Edinburgh and lie within the county of West Lothian.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

  • From Edinburgh come off at junction 4 on the M9
  • Take the A801
  • Take the B825 towards Avonbridge.
  • As you come down into Avonbridge turn left.
  • Continue through Avonbridge past the Slamannan Road rising up a small incline and then take the next right hand turn.
  • Continue following signs to Drumtassie fishery and take the next right hand turn.
  • After about 1 mile you will see Crith Wood on your right. It is opposite a large Woodlands for sale sign.
