Pitt Wood South is a strongly commercial sweet chestnut coppice woodland. The wood could provide an owner the opportunity to sell timber into the growing biomass market, or alternatively to sell as standing chestnut. Additionally, the coppice would provide a good supply of fuel for personal heating requirements.

The whole of Pitt Wood South is designated as part of a larger a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) by Natural England. The description (citation) can be seen by clicking here and a map to show the SSSI here. This describes some of the nature found in Pitt Wood South. The ground flora includes bluebells, wood anemone, dog’s mercury, lords-and-ladies, yellow archangel, wood spurge, and primrose. Two nationally rare orchids, narrow-lipped helleborine and lady orchid also occur in this area.

Pitt Wood South offers a new owner the unique opportunity to act as a custodian to conserve the very special features of this woodland.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.


Natural England designates the majority of Pitt Wood South as an Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland (ASNW) meaning it has been woodland since at least 1600AD. One compartment is designated as Ancient Replanted Woodland (PAWS), however the management plan notes that this is either out of date or incorrect because this area is now native or naturalised mixed broadleaves.

Pitt Wood South is mainly sweet chestnut coppice with mature oak standards and minor elements of mixed broadleaves throughout. The chestnut is in various stages of its lifecycle with some areas being ready for coppicing, other compartments to be coppiced in the future. One compartment in the south east would benefit from a selective thin as noted in the draft management plan. Other species found in Pitt Wood South include hornbeam, wild cherry, oak, ash, birch, hazel, sycamore and field maple. The draft woodland management plan is available upon request.


Pitt Wood South attracts many birds – there are reports of buzzards, green and great spotted woodpeckers, nightingales, hawfinch, yellowhammers, redwings and sparrowhawks. The wood also provides a good butterfly habitat due to rotational open space and open rides.

Access, tracks and footpaths

There are a number of tracks providing access for suitable forestry vehicles through Pitt Wood, some of which are public rights of way as indicated on the map.

The cathedral city of Canterbury is approximately 7 miles away and includes the stunning Westgate Gardens and also offers an opportunity to do some punting on the Great Stour. For those interested in wildlife, with over 400 animals, Howletts Wild Animal Park is well worth a visit and is within a 15-minute drive.

  • From Canterbury go south on the A2 Dover Road for about 4.5 miles and take the exit signposted Barham, Kingston and Bish‘b’rne.
  • At the bottom of the slip road turn left onto Coldharbour Lane, signposted Highland Court Farm. Continue straight on past Highland Court Farm on your left. The road narrows, continue straight on until the cross roads.
  • Cross straight over onto Woodlands Road. Follow the road round to the right until you pass a water tower on your left. Continue straight on until the road takes a sharp turn to the left. At this point there are 2 options. For those with suitable 4x4 forestry vehicles continue straight on along the byway – it is possible to park at the main track entrance into Pitt Wood South (marked A on the wood map below). Please note the track is unsurfaced and parking to view the wood is at viewer’s risk.
  • Alternatively, follow Woodlands Road round to the left and continue into the village of Adisham. Find somewhere suitable to park on The Street. The wood can then be accessed on foot via the public footpath leading from The Street to the wood. This is marked B on the wood map below.
