SOLD: Sowdens Gate Wood £35,000 Freehold

Description

Sowdens Gate Wood is an ancient woodland of a very manageable size, with great broadleaf tree variety. The chestnut, birch, and hazel have all been coppiced at various times in the past. In its current growth stage, the chestnut would certainly provide some excellent coppice products such as posts and rails. There is more here besides, such as oak, sycamore, holly, hornbeam, ash and field maple. Much of which could provide a new owner a steady source of fuel supply to a wood stove or open fire. In the spring the forest floor is abundant with wildflowers including bluebells, wood anemone, violets and dog’s mercury.

Natural England designate the woodland as an Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland (ASNW) meaning it has been wooded since at least 1600AD.

The woodland slopes down to the north which provides a good sense of privacy from the road. A narrow strip under the electrical wayleave has been cleared. This allows more light into the wood, as well as providing a wonderful sunny habitat for butterflies. There is a place for an owner to park to the side of the track by the wood, and from here a short walk takes you to a small private clearing. Here a bench has been installed where you can sit and enjoy the views across the adjoining woodland, and beyond that, the River Tillingham valley.

There is so much to see and enjoy in this area of Sussex, as Sowdens Gate Wood is only 5 miles from the attractive coastal town of Rye.

The owner of Sowdens Gate Wood will have a key to the gate and vehicle right of way along the stoned track marked in green on the map.
