Gladius Wood is in a quiet rural setting, bounded by woodland and the B6307, in an area generally given over to farming and forestry. The topography of the wood is relatively flat and level, dipping to the north-west where several drainage channels converge on a small culvert. A roadside fringe of Western red cedar quickly gives way to the predominant species; larch. A beautiful tree, larch is unusual for a conifer in that it is deciduous. The changing seasons are reflected in the changing leaf colours, from a soft verdant green in the spring to wonderful autumnal yellows and oranges.

Self-seeded, birch and oak although not considered understory species, at their current stage of development, complement holly and rowan to fulfil this important niche. The woodland floor is a healthy mix of furze, heather, mosses and grasses. Foragers will be pleased to note the presence of wimberry, pig nuts and bramble together with a seasonal bounty of mixed fungi.

The deep drainage channels have been spanned with rustic footbridges to facilitate access throughout the wood. Their damp dark recesses provide a welcome refuge for damp loving plants and a variety of native amphibians.

The large amount of growing timber could be sustainably harvested as a domestic wood fuel source, this would also encourage a greater diversity of trees and flora to flourish in the space and light created.

An overnight camping stay is an attractive proposition facilitating wildlife watching at the prime times of dusk and dawn.

The woods at Dilston were formerly part of the estate of the Radcliffes of nearby Dilston Hall. Now serving as a much more useful specialist further education college the hall was built to rival nearby 18th century mansions but was never completed. At the outbreak of the Jacobite Rebellion, work was suspended, never to be resumed. All that remains are the ruins of Dilston Castle, situated on the banks of the Devils water, a lively tributary of the River Tyne.

The name Gladius was chosen for the wood as a nod to the strong Roman influences in the area. Gladius was one of several Latin words for sword, and is used to represent the primary sword of Ancient Roman foot soldiers.

Access: Is through a wooden field gate off the B6307 then along a short track to a hard standing and turning area in the wood.

Surrounding Area: Gladius Wood is part of a larger area of woodland which runs down to the River Tyne. The Tyne is considered to be England's best salmon river which together with sea trout runs gives the opportunity for excellent fishing. This is a quiet rural setting with many public footpaths with good walking. Nearby is Hadrian's Wall with the more challenging Hadrian's Wall Long Distance Path.

The attractive market towns of Hexham with its historic abbey and Roman Corbridge lie a short drive away. Rowing and canoeing are popular from Tyne Green riverside park.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Gladius Wood is about ½ hour's drive west of Newcastle just south of Corbridge and 4 miles south east of Hexham.

• Travelling along the A69 take the A6079 towards the centre of Hexham.

• Cross the river, over a mini roundabout, over the railway and turn left at the second mini roundabout, sign-posted Prudhoe A695. Pass Matthew Charlton hire shop on the left and turn left onto Perth Head. At the T junction bear left back onto the A695.

• Pass the Physic garden at Dilston and turn first right continuing on the A695. Turn right onto the B6307 sign-posted Blanchland.

• Go under the power line and the entrance to Gladius Wood is from the fourth gate on the left.

• Please park safely off the public road.

• Walk up the woodland track to the crossroads, turn left and continue to the end, turn left again, the entrance to the wood is clearly marked ahead.
