Description
Old Quarry wood is a mature woodland - and as the name implies, has it's own ancient quarry! Rising gently from the newly refurbished track and parking area, a pathway leads upwards and around, revealing beautiful views across the open fields of southern Shropshire.
On the private pathways within the woodland, the level of vegetation underfoot is not too high allowing one to explore amongst the trees. Here you will find some very old mature trees, Oak and Chestnut to name a few. There are some areas of bracken and bramble that would benefit from some gentle woodland management, and would encourage the growth of the existing areas of bluebell which are evident in the spring and early summer. Of particular note are the honeysuckle vines providing colour and a lovely aroma in the cooler summer hours.
All of Sallow Coppice has been identified as an Ancient Woodland. Ancient woods are areas of woodland that have persisted since 1600 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 1750 in Scotland. They are relatively undisturbed by human development. As a result, they are unique and complex communities of plants, fungi, insects and other microorganisms.

Woodlands have worked closely with Shropshire Council to preserve the Public and Permissive Paths within Sallow Coppice. Old Quarry Wood has these pathways around two sides. There are no Public or Permissive Paths within the centre of the woodland.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
Trees
The trees are various ages and generally mature, with some areas where the last thinning opened wider areas. The dominant trees are Oak, Ash and Sweet Chestnut, with significant
numbers of Birch and Sycamore. Form is generally good; there are some characterful trees which are aesthetically attractive. The density of tree numbers is high and, from a silvicultural
perspective, thinning some of the lesser trees will allow the remaining trees to develop along with the ecological functions that nature provides.
The woodland is classified as an Ancient and Semi Natural Woodland (ASNW) meaning it has been under continuous tree cover of native tree and shrub species since at least 1600 AD.
Wildlife
While we were working in the woodland, Red Kites were often seen overhead. We also observed Woodcock and there were lots of signs of active Woodpeckers. Talking to a resident (of over 70 years) he has seen Deer and possibly Pine Marten within the woods.
There are areas of established Snowdrops and lots of signs of early Bluebells. Summer brings Honeysuckle and in winter the Holly provides some colour.
Features
At approximately 180m above sea level at its highest point Old Quarry Wood has beautiful views over the countryside. Old Quarry Wood as the name implies, boasts a disused quarry pit and ancient pathways.
Old Quarry Wood flattens out above the quarry, creating a great place to explore and play.
Access, tracks and footpaths
Upon purchase, the new owner will have an access key which will allow them to drive to Old Quarry Wood. This track is a public foot path and is used by pedestrians. The pedestrian and woodland path carries on to the top north east corner of Old Quarry Wood. A permissive path then runs north south along the eastern boundary.
There are no rights of way for the public within the rest of the wood.
Activities
Old Quarry Wood, Sallow Coppice is located next to the old town of Craven Arms. The name originates from the 17th century Craven Arms Inn. Later it was the creation of a major railway junction that stimulated growth of the settlement in Victorian times.

Local area and history
Within walking distance of Old Quarry Wood is Stokesay Castle. It was constructed at the end of the 13th century by Laurence of Ludlow, who at the time was one of the richest men in England. It remains a treasure by-passed by time, one of the best places to visit in England to experience what medieval life was like. Today the castle has been carefully restored and there is plenty to do here on a family day out. The castle is within walking distance of Old Quarry Wood.
Nearby there is the Bronze age settlement of Norton Camp.

From the north:
Follow signs to Craven Arms on the A49. Once in the Town, turn right along Clun Road (B4368) towards Clun. After 500m take the first small road on your left, pass under the railway bridge. Follow this small road until you see a layby with a gated area on your left. This is the parking area from which to enter the woodland. (Purchasers will be given a key to this locked gate in order to access their wood).
From the south:
Follow signs to Ludlow then continue on the A49 towards Craven Arms. Pass Stokesay Castle on your left and the discovery centre on your right. As you enter Craven Arms take Clun Road (B4368) on your left. Follow this small road until you see a layby with a gated area on your left. This is the parking area from which to enter the woodland. (Purchasers will be given a key to this locked gate in order to access their wood).
