Description
Coed Adain is well positioned, tucked into the shelter of the southeast corner of the larger woodland.
Entering the wood from its north eastern corner the woodland is initially fairly level and then begins to slope up gently, becoming steeper as it nears the southern boundary. The eastern half of the wood is predominantly sycamore, widely spaced and easy to wander through and with plenty of space to create areas for camping, woodworking or bushcraft.
Towards the western boundary an area of dense scrub develops. This is natural regeneration following a clear fell, comprising of hardy pioneer species such as birch, rowan and willow, together with sycamore, oak and ash saplings and some self seeded conifer interspersed with thick bramble in parts.
The natural regeneration clears towards the south western corner boundary and again you find yourself among well spaced mature broadleaf, this time beech and oak, covered with bluebells at forest floor come the spring.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
Trees
The predominant species in Coed Adain is sycamore, a vigorous growing tree whose timber is a beautiful pale cream with contrasting darker heartwood. Their foliage is similar to a maple and they produce hundreds of their familiar helicopter seed pods.
Interspersed with the sycamore are some mature beech and oak towards the southern/south western edge of the woodland. The mature sycamore, oak and beech are well grown and well spaced.
The area of natural regeneration along the western boundary consists of other young broadleaf of the tough and hardy variety, able to cope with the coastal environment, birch, rowan and willow interspersed with gorse and bramble.
Wildlife
Sycamore seem to be particularly delicious to aphids which in turn means they support a fantastic range of insects; ladybirds, hoverflies etc as well as various moth caterpillars, in turn attracting birds and other wildlife who are also attracted by their seedpods and the nectar and pollen from the sycamore flower.
Features
Airy, well-spaced woodland with diverse mature broadleaf and so close to the coast it provides a great base for further exploring but also for forestry activities of all sorts including perhaps educational workshops or forest school.
Access, tracks and footpaths
Access to Coed Adain is up a stoned forest track with some steep sections which we would advise is only suitable for four wheel drive vehicles. However access to the larger woodland Coed Rhydtir, of which Coed Adain is a part, is directly off the A487 and easily accessible to all vehicles all year round.
There are no public footpaths through Coed Adain or the larger woodland Coed Rhydtir.
Just north of Coed Rhydtir, it's possible to access a public footpath which links to the Wales Coastal Path at the northernmost tip of Aberystwyth
Activities
There's certainly scope here for creating a lovely area for camping combined with areas for nature watching.
The regenerating area of the woodland will benefit from management and there are opportunities to establish some coppice.

Aberystwyth is a buzzing university town with all amenities, good food and bars and with its famous long Victorian seafront promenade and Wales' longest pier!
Up on Constitution Hill, at the north end of Aber is the cliff top Camera Obscura

From Aberystwyth, travel north on the A487 towards Bow Street or Talybont.
Continuing downhill on the A487, just after the turning to Penrhyncoch, signposted off to the right, you will see a large pull in on the left and the entrance to the woodland with a Woodlands for Sale signboard.
Park here and continue into the woodland on foot.
Follow the main track into the wood, take the left fork up the short steep section of slope and continue straight ahead where you will see a ride stop with a wooden name board at the entrance to Coed Adain and a Woodlands for Sale board.
