Description
The south facing slope of Coed Sena sits tucked away in beautiful, peaceful North Pembrokeshire countryside, overlooking woodland to the front and with pastureland behind it. The main shared access track runs along its southern boundary and at its point of entry into the wide open quarry area which is found at the western end of Coed Sena, a corner has been fenced off for Coed Sena's sole use for parking a vehicle, or stacking timber after thinning or woodland management jobs.
Coed Sena slopes up from its southern edge, very gently to start with and it is easy to access the woodland from the south eastern corner and make your way through the Sitka. The ruins of a small stone building, a reminder of the time when there was a small settlement of farm workers presumably living here. Now it offers potential to rebuild a woodland folly! Ivy and ferns proliferate the forest floor here and the ground between is thick with spruce needles.
An old forest track traverses the woodland west to east about mid point up the slope, providing useful level ground in the higher reaches of the woodland as well as easy access between the west and east boundary. This would be a great place for wildlife or bird watching, or a place for forestry or bushcraft tasks.
The woodland above the track, up to the northern boundary is predominantly broadleaf, carpeted with bluebells below, with other wildflowers to follow; pink campion, white woodland anemone and oxalis to name a few.
Trees
Predominantly Sitka spruce, there are also some well grown Douglas fir within Coed Sena along with a nice variety of native broadleaf in the upper reaches of the woodland including oak, birch, sycamore, hazel, hawthorn, along with some holly. The lower edges of the woodland are fringed with a similar mix of young broadleaf, along with ivy and fern at forest floor and many wildflowers and honeysuckle amongst the broadleaf.
Wildlife
Surrounded by fields and away from any big roads, the larger woodland Gallt Sena of which Coed Sena is a part, is a wildlife haven. There are some large, very long established badger setts in areas of the larger woodland and red deer have been spotted wandering through which is fairly unusual in this part of the world. Birds proliferate and early butterflies take advantage of the many wildflowers springing up, bluebells, wood anemone, oxalis, blue and yellow speedwell, pink campion and celandine. The mix of habitats, both conifer and the more light exposed broadleaf area of woodland higher up the slope draw a wider variety of bird and insect life, and the mammals which follow.

South facing slope.
Ruins of a small stone farm building.

Access, tracks and footpaths
There is easy vehicle access to Coed Sena. A long, stoned track brings you from the public road to the woodland, via the locked main entrance gate. At the approximate mid point of Gallt Senna, you come to the quarry, a large open space, a corner of which has been designated for the sole use of Coed Sena as its parking area.
The main shared access track of Gallt Senna is a designated bridle way and partially, a public footpath, although there is no public footpath running through Coed Sena itself.
Rights and covenants
As is the case for all our woodlands, the purchaser will be asked to enter into a covenant which serves to protect the peace and quiet of the woodland.
Activities
The Sitka spruce would benefit from thinning in time, a good source of timber for building a shelter or tool store in Coed Sena, or useful firewood supply. This opens up the opportunity for replanting with native broadleaf leaving a more diverse woodland and habitat for future generations.
The nearby public footpath connects to fantastic walking in local area and the nearby Cilwendeg estate.
Local area and history
The Shell House , or the Cilwendeg Hermitage is an extraordinary grotto, a rare survival in West Wales, which underwent careful and beautiful restoration in 2003.
It was built in the late 1820s by Morgan Jones the Younger, who inherited the Cilwendeg estate upon the death of his uncle (a lighthouse baron !), and created the Shell House in his uncle’s honour. Cilwendeg Mansion was designed by John Nash.
The surrounding area of the Cych valley is also rife with myth and mystery. One of the portals into the mystical realm of Annwn, or the Otherworld, as described in the famous Welsh myth tetraology, the Mabinogion, is said to be located nearby, at the Ffynnone Falls.
The stunning Cardigan coast is within easy reach, and the towns of Cardigan and Newcastle Emlyn are both within half an hours drive with all amenities, great pubs, cafes and independent shops, but even nearer is the Nag's Head, a mere walk away in Abercych itself!

From Newcastle Emlyn take the A484 towards Cenarth. At Cenarth take the left turn just after the Three Horseshoes pub, signposted B4332. Follow the road through Abercych, and just before you leave the village, take the left turn BEFORE you go over the small stone bridge. Look out for a bridleway sign, and a small Woodlands for Sale arrow sign.
Continue along this track, you will pass a small water treatment plant on the right, until you come to a locked wooden gate with a Woodlands for Sale sign on it. Please park up on the left, making sure not to obstruct access through the gate and continue on foot.
