Description
Coed Sugi is a small sheltered corner of Coed Rhydtir, the larger woodland of which it is a part. It is a lovely diverse woodland with unusually, a stand of Japanese cedar, the national tree of Japan where it is known as the sugi, for which the wood is named.
The ground gently slopes from the entrance and the western boundary down towards the eastern boundary but it is not unduly steep. The south-western corner levels off somewhat and would be a fantastic camping spot amongst some gorgeous mature beech whose canopy keep the forest floor clear.
With easy access directly off the road, Coed Sugi has many potential uses apart from just enjoyment or conservation - perhaps as a setting for Forest School, especially with its interesting mix of tree species.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
Trees
There's a good diverse collection of species in Coed Sugi, including both conifer and broadleaf. A young chestnut marks the entrance and the track /parking area brings you to a stand of Douglas fir, which extends all along the western boundary to the south western corner where the ground levels and a lovely line of mature beech marks the corner of Coed Sugi at the meeting of the western and southern boundary. The beech's habit of suppressing understory growth makes this area a superb spot for setting up camp or a spoon carving circle...
The central and western section of the wood is predominantly made up of Japanese cedar, a fragrant tree with red brown bark and soft green foliage. The fascinating method of daisugi (similar to our coppicing) used to be practiced on Japanese cedar in northern Japan to produce straight timber for use as the central support in the architecture of traditional tea houses. It is still practiced on a smaller scale and perhaps could be tried here as an experiment on one or two of the cedar!
The south eastern corner sees an area of birch and then more ash extending along the eastern boundary with an understory of rhododendron and holly.
Wildlife
The sheltered south facing aspect of Coed Sugi along with the variety of broadleaf and conifer make this a wildlife friendly woodland. Further supplemental planting and bringing nesting boxes into the woodland could also encourage more wildlife and birdlife into the woodland.
Access, tracks and footpaths
Access to Coed Sugi is good, directly off the A487 and then via a newly surfaced stoned forest track. There is a short steep section which we would recommend is only accessible to four wheel drive vehicles, especially in wet weather.
There are no public footpaths through Coed Sugi or through the larger woodland, Coed Rhydtir.
Activities
There are all manner of options presented here from camping and using the woodland as a base from which to explore the wonderful surrounding Ceredigion coastline, to setting up a Forest School with the woodlands proximity to Aberystwyth and good access, to sitting back and watching the swaying cedars and filling your nostrils with their intoxicating scent....
Local area and history
Aberystwyth is a buzzing university town with all amenities, good food and bars, and with its famous long Victorian seafront promenade and Wales' longest pier!
Up on Constitution Hill, at the north end of Aber is the cliff top Camera Obscura.
Ten miles or so inland are the world famous Devil's Bridge Falls and you could even get there on a steam train with The Vale of Rheidol Railway !

Directions
From Aberystwyth, travel north on the A487 towards Bow Street or Talybont.
Continuing downhill on the A487, just after the turning to Penrhyncoch, signposted off to the right, you will see a large pull in on the left and the entrance to the woodland with a Woodlands for Sale signboard.
Park here and continue over the gate and into the woodland on foot or call Tamsin or Matt for the code on the pedestrian gate.
Follow the main track and then take the left turn, up a short steep incline and then take the first left again which is the entrance to Coed Sugi. There is a ridestop at the entrance with a wooden name board and a Woodlands for Sale sign.
