Soil isn't important, matter of fact you can grow a tree without soil. Look at the side of a mountain that's completely vertical and all rock, trees will grow there as long as there's a water source and nutrients at the roots.
And how do you get good nutrients if they are not coming from good soil to collect around the roots? Do you think rock cliffs have Amazon drones dropping off nutrient solution? Or, is it possible the roots are finding soil in the cracks.
I don't think anyone can answer that for you. Look around. Does it look the same? Feel the same? Do equal samples fulled soaked get fully dry in the same time frame? Do the samples pass his test the same way from each location?.
