When you strike a Ferro Rod it works with any sharp edge, not just a high carbon steel blade. I’m sure this was a slip of the tongue though.

I’ve had luck with just a piece of sharp edged quartz on my 13 year old ferro rod. You are right.

I purchased a fire piston back in 09’. I had horrible luck just trying to get it to work for me. I ended up throwing it away, at the cost of $40. Now I stick with a ferro rod or two form of friction fire methods.
