Actually, that's a mistranslation of the Latin name. The correct (and realistically less offensive) translation would be Judas's Ear. Folklore has it that Judas hanged himself on an Elder tree, which gives further credence to the name

As you rightly identify the botanical name of the fungus is Oria oncula judea. Hence the more usual common name of Jews ear fungus.
