Description
Sandor Wood is a delightful woodland, set far back from the public road, lending it a very tranquil feeling. An area of hardstanding is situated at the entrance of the wood, adjacent to the bing, the generic name for a large pile of waste aggregate from when the area was mined for coal. Part of this bing has been retained for using on any future track repairs.
There are many different and interesting layers to this woodland; a large open area that would be perfect for future planting, or a small stand of ash that has a few specimens that are surviving ash die back, at least for now. The main area of the woodland is pretty and atmospheric area of birch, that has the feel of old woodland and is arguably the most attractive part of this woodland. Towards the back is an area of raised bog land that is another unique eco system, attracting a diversity of creatures: a bench is installed here that is the perfect place to rest a while when the sun shines.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Trees
Sandor Wood is dominated by an old mature stand of birch, with some rowan and hawthorn towards the bing area. There is a stand of ash towards the boundary of the neighbouring woodland, though this has been ash die back but will provide a good volume of firewood.
Wildlife
These woods are the perfect place for setting up a trail cam for observing nocturnal comings and goings, there are many animal trails noticeable through the old birch stand.
Features
Towards the back of Sandor Wood is a raised bog rich in many different sphagnum mosses, this is an ecological treasure trove that is becoming increasingly rare.
Access, tracks and footpaths
The access tracks are in excellent shape, strengthened with an almost unlimited supply of on site stone: there is plenty of material for any future collective repairs to the shared track.
Rights and covenants
All sporting rights are sold with the woodland however mineral rights have been retained by the coal board as it was an old mining site. With the move away from carbon fuels the days of coal mining are long gone.

This is the perfect playground for children; ideal for den making for young and old.
Local area and history
Gateside Woodland sits directly next to the small ex-mining village of Standburn, with the closest town being Falkirk about 6 miles away.
Falkirk sits on the junction of the Forth and Clyde and Union Canals and as such became an important trade route and hub of heavy industry in the 18th and 19th centuries. The steel industry was dominant as was coal mining, necessary to feed the engine of industrialisation. The area is now more dependant on tourism and retail with many old mining sites reverting to woodland.
Nearby attractions include the Falkirk Wheel and The Helix, home of the famous Kelpie art installation.
Edinburgh is only twenty miles away and Glasgow 30 miles making these woods very accessible from the city.

- Coming in from the M9.
- Take the A801 heading towards Armadale
- At the first roundabout take the B825 heading towards Avonbridge.
- The woods are just past the village of Standburn on the left.
- Park by the metal gate but in a way that does not restrict access.
- Following the track to bottom and bear right till you reach the end and Sandor Wood is on the left hand side.
