SOLD: Thane Wood £49,000 Freehold

Description

Thane Wood is a lovely deciduous woodland that, with thoughtful stewarding, will mature into a really delightful woodland. Sitting upon a gentle slope that rises slowly to level ground, it is easy to traverse with well spaced planting. An existing internal track leading to a central open area, would make an ideal base camp. The wood mainly consists of oak and sycamore with other species interspersed throughout, providing great potential for coppicing for wood fuel. Coppicing is an ancient but somewhat neglected practice, a form of woodland management that involves cutting back to ground level, though there is a need to protect the regrowth from browsing deer.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.

Trees

This woodland has been well stocked with a diverse mixture of deciduous trees that are now well established; the oaks especially are thriving. Oak supports more wildlife than any other native tree, earning it the reputation as a cornerstone of a wood; in these autumn months badgers, squirrels and deer will feed off the acorns.

Wildlife

The wildlife is abundant with plenty of deer, signs of transient badgers, as well as abundant birdlife in spring. The quietness of the woodland is attractive to wildlife for obvious reasons.

Features

There is a stream that flows adjacent to the main track that will act as a magnet for wildlife as well as providing a water supply to woodland owners.

Access, tracks and footpaths

The existing tracks have been recently repaired with materials sourced on site, easily accessible aggregate available for further patch ups as and when required.

Rights and covenants

All sporting rights are sold with the woodland.

Activities

The woods at Gateside are very private with little outside use apart from immediate neighbours and would suit those looking to explore the potentials of hutting.

Local area and history

Gateside Woodland sits directly next to the small ex-mining village of Standburn, with the closest town being Falkirk about 6 miles away.

Falkirk sits on the junction of the Forth and Clyde and Union Canals and as such became an important trade route and hub of heavy industry in the 18th and 19th centuries. The steel industry was dominant as was coal mining, necessary to feed the engine of industrialisation. The area is now more dependant on tourism and retail with many old mining sites reverting to woodland.

Nearby attractions include the Falkirk Wheel and The Helix , home of the famous Kelpie art installation.

Edinburgh is only twenty miles away and Glasgow 30 miles making these woods very accessible from the city.
